A big thanks to everyone who took part in the treasure hunt last month and helped to make it such a great success..
Well done to everyone who came close and better luck next time. You don’t have to wait long to try again because there’s a new hunt beginning every month.
And just to put your mind at rest here’s the full solution to the June 09 Treasure Hunt of Old London Town.
The lines from the original clue are in bold and the explanations are underneath.
Begin from the site of Hubert's misdeed,
'Hubert' is Robert Hubert, famous for his false confession of starting the Great Fire of London which began on Pudding Lane.
The cylinder, circle and westward will lead,
The cylinder is the tube and the circle is the circle line. Follow the circle line westward from the nearest tube station which is Monument.
Stop off at the house and then find the saloon,
Following the circle line you come to Mansion House, a tube station named after the nearby official residence of the Lord Mayor of the City of London.
There is a room within Mansion House called the salon or saloon.
Now where is the dancer who covered this room?
George Dance the Younger added a roof to the saloon, he is buried in St Paul's Cathedral.
Look close there, who's next to the history scribe?
Looking at the virtual tour of the cathedral you can see a grave in the OBE Chapel inscribed with the words 'Author of History'. The grave next to this one belongs to Robert Gregory a former dean of St. Paul's.
He leads to a place near a European drive.
Gregory Place, in Kensington is near a road called Holland Street.
Take a stroll in the garden and find the old tree,
The nearby Kensington Gardens are home to a 900 tree stump called the Elfin Oak.
It's mover once stayed where you finally will be.
The Elfin Oak was moved from Richmond Park as part of the George Lansbury scheme.
George Lansbury was imprisoned in Pentonville Prison for making speeches in favor of suffragettes.
Where are you?
Pentonville Prison
