There is an alleyway formerly known as 'Mad Alice Lane' in York. It was named after Alice Smith who lived there until 1825 when she was taken to the castle and hanged for the ‘crime’ of insanity. They say that her restless spirit haunts the alleyway.
There once was a mole where the sign points today.
'Mad Alice Lane' is now known as Lunds Court. Lund is a village in the East Riding of Yorkshire which was home to John Fancy, a British airman whose tunneling escapes from various German prisoner of war camps during World War II earned him the nickname 'The Mole'.

The inn near the village green in Lund is called the Wellington Inn.There is a street in the center of Leeds (LS 1)called Wellington Street.

Barbara Hepworth the Yorkshire born sculptor and artist who created a work called 'Tides', was born in 1903.
