1966: England wins World CupHost nation England beat Germany 4-2 to win the World Cup final at Wembley Stadium. In extra-time, Geoff Hurst scored his third of three goals to win the game, handing England the Jules Rimet Trophy for the first time in the World Cup’s 36-year history. Hurst’s second goal earlier stirred considerable controversy when film footage suggested that it failed to cross the goal line after bouncing off the crossbar.
